Do I have to make an advance booking for the underground tours?

As a group, can we take part in a public tour?

  • We are unable to spontaneously accommodate large groups on the public tours as they are designed for and aimed at individual guests. For this reason, ticket sellers will not allow one person to buy more than five tickets.
  • Some tours are available upon request to groups in English and in some other languages.
Please visit the section GUIDED TOURS > TOURS FOR GROUPS for further information.

What kind of clothing is recommended for the underground tours?

  • For all tours, sturdy footwear is required (no sandals or flip flops, etc.).

  • There are no further special requirements for Tour 1 and Tour 3. However, please be aware that it is always a little bit chilly underground. The lighting is sufficient and our structures are dry.

  • For Tour 2 – “From Flak Towers to Mountains of Debris” – sturdy footwear is absolutely obligatory and warm clothes are recommended! The temperature in the Flak Tower is 10°C / 50°F at best, even in the summer, and the humidity is considerable. Helmets are provided by the Berlin Underworlds Association.

  • For Tour M – “Under the Berlin Wall” warm clothes are recommended!

Are the tours accessible to handicapped people?

  • Due to limitations imposed by the structure of the bunkers, our tours and exhibitions are not handicapped accessible.

  • Most of the time during a tour is spent walking and standing. There are no chairs. There are several staircases.

  • Please read our important notes about the tours as well.

Can children take part in the tours?

  • Our tours and exhibitions are not appropriate for children under 7 years of age. We regret that we must therefore refuse entry to children in this age group. This is due to the Jugendschutzgesetz (JuSchG) § 8 (German Child Protection Law). Due to the difficult historical themes discussed during our tours, it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to decide whether children between 7 and 13 years of age may take part. The delivery and content of our tours is aimed at adults, and can only be recommended for children aged 14 years or older.

  • For Tour A (in German only), all participants must be at least 14 years of age.

  • For Tour 2 – “From Flak Towers to Mountains of Debris” all participants must be at least 18 years of age.

May I film or take photos during a tour?

  • Photography and filming are generally not permitted.

  • In the past we have observed that photography and filming can considerably disrupt the flow of the tours. Additionally, we have a number of artefacts on display that are on loan from eyewitnesses, whose copyright and right to privacy has to be protected. We are happy to provide professional press photos on request for a specific publication.

  • Producers of professional TV-documentaries should check our production notes.

Does the Berlin Underworlds Association offer gift vouchers for the underground tours?

  • No. As of 2017, we do not offer vouchers anymore.
  • If you already have vouchers: Unfortunately, currently you cannot redeem the vouchers as we do not have any options at our shop. We are working intensively on a solution and hope that you will soon be able to redeem your vouchers.
  • If you have a voucher that expires at the end of 2020 according to the imprint, they will remain valid until at least December 31st, 2022.

Where can I get information about tunnel walks or open-top subway tours?

The Berlin Transit Authority (BVG) is responsible for this.
Please take a look at this website: Erlebniswelt-Seite der BVG (in German)

Where is the “Fuehrerbunker” (Hitler’s bunker) and can it be visited?

  • The remains of the so-called “Fuehrerbunker” are situated beneath a carpark on the corner of  “Gertrud-Kolmar-Strasse” and “In den Ministergärten”, and marked by an information panel that our Association provided. During the Cold War, the site was next to the Berlin Wall, the border area between East and West Berlin. In 1988, some pioneers of the East German National Army excavated the bunker and filled it in. Today, there are just a few fragments of the floor and parts of the walls under the ground but no hollow spaces whatsoever. It is absolutely impossible to visit the “Fuehrerbunker”.
