Humboldthain Flak Tower

Berlin has a fascinating underground potential that is little or not at all utilised. It is therefore one of the aims of Berliner Unterwelten e.V. to open up underground facilities to the interested public.
The monstrous flak towers were erected at a total of three locations in Berlin between 1940 and 1942 to defend the city centre against Allied air raids with heavy artillery. There were also thousands of shelters for the civilian population inside the towers. In the post-war period, the Berlin flak towers were blown up by the Allies as military structures. The north side of the Humboldthain flak tower only remained as a ruin and then partially disappeared under a ‘Mont Klamott’ of over 1.5 million cubic metres of rubble.
After more than 50 years, Berliner Unterwelten e.V. has made part of the bunker ruins accessible again. After thousands of hours of work, the ‘topping-out ceremony’ was celebrated on October 18th, 2003. The district mayor of Berlin-Mitte, Joachim Zeller, the Parks Department, friends and supporters of the organisation were invited. Since April 2004, the success of the project has also been visible to the public in guided tours.
We would like to inform you about its history as well as the extensive restoration and securing work carried out by Berliner Unterwelten e.V., which has led to the fact that the interior of the ruins can now be entered. We also report on some exciting flak tower expeditions, not only in Berlin, and present some interesting artefacts.
