Tour DS – Dresdener Strasse Special

An underground experience at the border

Beneath Berlin’s streets lies a hidden world shaped by war and division. Nowhere is this more evident than under Dresdener Straße in Berlin’s Kreuzberg where you can explore all periods of Berlin’s underground history. Equipped with waders, you’ll step into a flooded bunker, an almost untouched underground space, where history has stood still for decades.
At Dresdener Straße, you’ll explore a hidden 450-meter-long tunnel from the early 20th century. During the Nazi era, parts of this structure were transformed into ‘mother and child’ (MuKi) Bunker, while other parts were retrofitted into an air raid shelter. The scars of history remain visible to this day. It was in this very bunker that hundreds of people survived the devastating firestorm of February 3, 1945, while the surrounding Luisenstadt district was reduced to ashes.
In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built right into the bunker itself, sealing off sections that lay under East and West Berlin. Remnants of border security installations have been preserved throughout the structure and along the walls, bearing witness to successful and failed escape attempts through the adjacent subway tunnel – stories you’ll uncover on this tour.
The most exciting part of your journey awaits as you pass beyond the Berlin Wall into the second half of the bunker. Here, seepage water stands over 80 centimeters deep, requiring special wading gear, which will be provided. In return, you’ll step into a hidden world – an untouched, atmospheric relic of Berlin’s past, unlike anything else the city has to offer.
