New exhibit on Tour M
Today a new exhibit will be set up on our Tour M – “Underground to freedom”.
It is a bronze bust (61 x 40 x 40 cm) of Egon Schultz.
Schultz worked as a teacher in Rostock-Dierkow from September 1962 to November 1963 before he was called up for military service, and later became a non-commissioned officer of the GDR border troops. During an escape attempt, for which “Tunnel 57” had been dug, there was an exchange of fire, during which Schultz was fatally hit.
In the GDR, Egon Schultz was a legend, a martyr - allegedly “murdered by West Berlin agents”. Only after the fall of the Wall did it turn out that his death had been accidentally caused by bullets from a comrade’s gun. Covered up by GDR state security, the incident became a well-kept state secret, the dead border guard a national hero. The bust is on loan from the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock. It was probably modelled on a death mask and originally stood in the former Egon Schultz School in Rostock.

Bat population stable
Annual monitoring of the bats’ winter quarters in Humboldthain flak tower shows that the population is stable. Greater mouse-eared and Daubenton's bats were encountered.

Review – the year 2019 in figures
In 2019, we counted around 360,000 visitors on approximately 17,000 public and group tours, as well as in our “Myth of Germania” exhibition.
On the “Long Night of the Underworlds”, we had around 2,600 visitors and around 1,850 on the “Long Night of the Museums”.
With around 700 participants in 2019, our training seminars are over 92% full.
As of December 31st, 2019, the Association has 508 members.
We would like to thank all of our guests, partners, friends and sponsors who visited, recommended and supported us last year. We wish you a healthy, successful and peaceful 2020.
